FAQ: MicroBase Pro Database Migration

How Can I Migrate My MicroBase Pro Data To Another Computer?

You can use the MicroBase Pro Messaging feature to send your data to another computer. The following example illustrates how you can transmit your data to the new computer via MicroBase Pro message.

For the purposes of this discussion, we will expect you to have the same version of MicroBase Pro installed on both your old and new computers with both computers having direct Internet access.

Transmit Old Data To New Computer Via MicroBase Messaging

Note: MicroBase Pro message sizes are limited to 2mb (about 1500 data items), so your entire database will only "fit" in a single message if it is fairly small.

  • Start MicroBase Professional on your Old computer.
  • Click Options - Data Filter. The Data Filter dialog will appear. Click Clear Filter - OK. All filter settings will be cleared.
  • Verify MicroBase (Active Items) is selected in lower left window.
  • Observe the number of data items shown in the status bar at bottom. Check this number against the limits shown above.
  • Click Messages - Create Message. A new message will appear. Address the message to yourself.
  • Enter helpful information in Text and Message areas.
  • At the bottom left, under Attach Data Files, click Selection List.
  • Once your attachments have been added, click Send to transmit the message.

Your message is now available for download to the New computer

  • Start MicroBase Professional on your New Computer. Make sure you are logged with the handle you sent the message to.
  • When MicroBase Pro starts, you should be alerted there are New Messages. Click Yes to display your Inbox.
  • Your new message will be shown in bold. Click on the new message to display it.
  • Click on the attachment shown at the bottom of the message and then click Import Data.
  • The incoming data will be imported into your New computer.
Use Multiple Messages If Your Database Is Large

If your database is too large to fit in one message, then use the data filter to select small chunks of your database to include in several messages. For example:

  • Message #1 - Contains all data from 1 Jan 2007 to 31 Dec 2008
  • Message #2 - Contains all data from 1 Jan 2009 to 31 Dec 2010
  • Message #3 - Contains all data from 1 Jan 2011 to 31 Dec 2012
